Out on the campaign trail, our Senators and Congressional representatives can get their fur up while threatening to “send a signal” to the Iraqi government. The words vary with the venue but what our elected leaders are demanding is that the Iraqi government get its act together. If you listen to them, they really want the Iraqi factions to work together to get things done.
Imagine this picture.
Iraqi leaders are sitting together watching CSpan and studying how democracy works. They represent three main people groups that haven’t worked together for a long time, perhaps not within the lifetimes of those watching. They have a library of CSpan tapes for the last several years. What do you suggest they watch so that they will begin to understand what we mean by bipartisanship?
No, there aren’t any current examples to show them, and haven’t been for some time.
So why yell at the Iraqis for failing to do what we can’t do either?
Maybe our leaders might accept a small suggestion: Stop talking about “working together” and show them some.
And as for sending that signal, you really don’t need to do that. The voters already did that, theirs and ours.
