So who is going to fill the space made empty by the departure of Imus?

Please tell us it won’t be Rosie.

Baghdad Perspectives

The big news from Baghdad depends upon where you live. If you live back here, then the headline is probably that bomb in the Green Zone.

But if you live in Baghdad, you might not see it that way. After all, it was only one bomb, and you don’t spend much time in the Green Zone where the government leaders are. So the big news, from where you live, might be the Sarafiya bridge that you used to use to cross the river.

Are We There Yet?

Real world anti-terrorism investigations take time.

They don’t happen the way they are sometimes depicted in Hollywood and on Television, where everything is wrapped up, neat and tidy, as the final car chase or roof top confrontation unfolds, and the credits roll.

Christopher Paul, 43, a U.S. citizen and Columbus, Ohio resident, was arrested Wednesday. He is charged with providing material support to terrorists, conspiracy to provide support to terrorists and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. The weapon of mass destruction charge carries the most serious penalty, up to life in prison.

The investigation into Paul has spanned four years, three continents and at least eight countries.

Four years without a leak. Imagine that.

Iran Puts Out The Welcome Mat For Pelosi

The Iranian vice-speaker of the parliament welcomed plans by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit Tehran, the Aftab news website reported Thursday.

“The stance by the US congressmen and lawmakers are different from that of (US President George W) Bush and if the planned visit is aimed at listening to our position, there would be no problem and even welcomed,” Mohammad-Reza Bahonar told Aftab.

Darth Who?

If we can believe recent press reports, Democrats will talk to Assad and other terrorists, but they won’t go on Fox News to debate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have rejected an invitation from President Bush to come to the White House to talk about a war spending bill.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards will not participate in a Democratic debate co-hosted by Fox News Channel this fall.

What are all these Democrats afraid of?

Someone seems to be orchestrating all this. But who?

Who would have the clout to keep them all in line?

Those Gulf Hostages

It was, first and foremost, a media event, and should be judged in that light. The video clips, and the hostages’ own stories are now in distribution to all the laptops, alongside all those copies of Black Hawk Down.

They used a time-honored military tactic: go out, find some prisoners, and bring them back for interrogation.

Then they let them go — this time. This is where the media came in: to communicate what they were capable of doing, and indeed had done.

Why? Depends upon who you think was the audience for the media show. That’s a bone for news junkies to chew on.

However, there’s another angle to all this. We should expect more incidents, perhaps with varied details but patterned after this one.

Why? Because they have done it once and Ahmadinejad will not be able to resist demonstrating that they can do it at will.

The Pirates of Tehran

“To misrepresent unpunished piracy as a victory is as Orwellian as the congressional mandate banning use of the term “the global war on terror.” What are we — Reuters?”

Former Senator Fred Thompson, (R-TN), isn’t quite a candidate for President yet, but he has now tossed into the ring his take on Iran and those British hostages.

Now, Not Later

Cindy Sheehan, formerly from California, but now a Texas neighbor of President Bush, is back in the news.

She hasn’t changed her mind about him or the war. But she now says the Democrats have “betrayed” their anti-war supporters. And she doesn’t like the timeline at all.

Her own timing is interesting. Speaker Pelosi is apparently out of the country somewhere, and most Congressional leaders and foot soldiers are out of town.

So is Cindy really at odds with the Democrats, or just filling in the news cycle during Spring Break?

One Year Later

Intelligence chief still can’t find a No. 2

Mike McConnell needs a deputy. The seat has been empty almost a year.

It won’t be easy to find someone qualified enough, and willing enough, to face the slash and burn treatment waiting on the Hill. It’s election season, and there’s a grenade, or the threat of one, in each question, especially when the lights and cameras are on.

Nobody seems to be breaking down doors to get the job. The seat could still be open when we finally roll around to the 08 elections, 578 days from now.

Can we afford to wait that long?

Drug Deal Gone Bad

From a recent newspaper account: “Wife now faces trial in ‘drug deal gone bad’”

It’s a familiar phrase. It rolls easily off the tongue, or keyboard.

It’s a popular phrase. A recent Google search for it reported almost 50,000 hits.

Is there ever such a thing as a drug deal gone good?

Something to think about.
