NORFOLK, Va. (Aug. 28. 2008) The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) heads to sea as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (IWO ESG) supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Fire Starters

At Hickam Air Force Base, an F-15A Eagle from the Hawaii Air National Guard is hoisted onto a barge Aug. 26, making its way to the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor.

Charleston Airmen deploy to support war on terrorism

Heroism Medal
NORTH ARABIAN SEA (Aug. 27, 2008) Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen presents Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class Jesse P. Hubble, from San Diego, Calif., assigned to the “Golden Falcons” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 2, with the Navy and Marine Corps Medal in the hangar bay of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
Hubble received the medal for his heroism in the rescue of 7 Sailors from a helicopter that ditched in the ocean while the Lincoln Strike Group was operating off the coast of Southern California in November 2007.
Lincoln is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom as well as maritime security operations.

Operation Bessemer
A U.S. Army soldier pulls security during Operation Bessemer, near Bayji, Iraq, Aug. 21, 2008.
The air assault operation was designed to clear the area of extremist elements.
The soldiers are assigned to the 101st Airborne Division’s 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment.
Airmen Enhance Army Medical Evacuation Mission
An HH-60 Pave Hawk combat search and rescue helicopter sits on the flightline as maintenance crews prepare it for a mission Aug. 10 at Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan.
The crews flying the HH-60s are supporting coalition and Afghan forces by landing in hostile areas to recover casualties and fly them to medical facilities for treatment.
Bridge Builders
American and Australian combat engineers rebuild the Mabey Johnson Bridge near Andar and Moqur in eastern Afghanistan, Aug. 25, 2008.
The U.S. soldiers are assigned to the 420th Engineer Brigade and the Australian solders are assigned to an Australian reconstruction task force.

Georgia Welcomes Dallas
BATUMI, Georgia (Aug. 27, 2008) Local Georgians gather to welcome the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas (WHEC 716).
Dallas arrived with more than 76,000 pounds of humanitarian assistance supplies to be given to the people of Georgia.
The supplies are in response to the request of the government of the Republic of Georgia. Dallas is part of Combined Task Force 367, the maritime element of the U.S. humanitarian assistance mission to Georgia.
