Indian Ocean Pirates

INDIAN OCEAN (Sept. 28, 2008) MV Faina as observed by the crew of the guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83).

The Belize-flagged cargo ship is owned and operated by “Kaalybe Shipping Ukraine” and is carrying a cargo of Ukrainian T-72 tanks and related equipment.

The ship was attacked on Sept. 28 and forced to proceed to an anchorage off the Somali Coast.

Howard is deployed with the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations to promote stability and regional economic prosperity.

Harrier Landing

Guarding The Entrance For Iraqi Army Medics To Work

Bees’ Buzz

Agricultural production soon will increase in the Bazarak District of Kabul, Afghanistan, thanks to the delivery of 150 bee boxes Sept. 17, 2008.

The local government and the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team started the $180,000 province-wide project because the bees will lead to more plentiful pollination and help crops grow better.

Reconstructing A Water Pipeline

BAINET, Haiti (Sept. 25, 2008) Seabees and Air Force engineers, deployed with the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), reconstruct a water pipeline that was destroyed by recent hurricanes.

Service members from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, along with medical personnel from the U.S. Public Health Service, Canadian Army, Air Force and Navy, Brazil, Project HOPE and International Aid, embarked aboard Kearsarge, are working together to conduct hurricane relief operations in Haiti.

Western Pacific Focus

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (Sept. 25, 2008) The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS O’Kane (DDG 77) departs Naval Station Pearl Harbor as part of the Mid-Pacific Surface Combatant Operational Employment program.

The program calls for nine of the 11 Hawaii-based surface combatants to focus on the Western Pacific by conducting intermediate/advanced training and regular deployments in the Western Pacific, and is designed to improve the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s war fighting readiness and effectiveness.
