Iraqi airmen keep helicopter fleet flying

Iraqi air force Lt. Col. Auday Yasseu Yousif inspects a section of the tail rotor drive shaft of a Mi-17 Hip helicopter Sept. 11 at Al Taji Air Base, Iraq.

The helicopter had made a hard landing and struck its tail skid against the ground, requiring a close inspection of its tail section.

Colonel Yousif is chief engineer for Iraqi air force Squadron 4 second-line maintenance.

Reagan Readiness

GULF OF OMAN (Sept.19, 2008) An aviation electronics technician performs maintenance checks prior to an engine test run on an EA-6B Prowler assigned to the “Cougars” of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 139 on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

Ronald Reagan is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet of responsibility.

Bridge Needed

CABARET-CAZALES, Haiti (Sept. 19, 2008) Air Force engineers and Navy Seabees embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) inspect a bridge in a small community between Cabaret and Cazales that was damaged by Hurricane Ike.

Kearsarge has departed Haiti for Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to resupply, but has left a small contingent of service members to continue relief operations.

Jordan Baptism


Jordan River, ISRAEL (Sept. 15, 2008)

Cmdr. Jonathan Smith, command chaplain for the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), baptizes Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Brian Wenzel in the Jordan River.

Sailors and Marines assigned to the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group were baptized during a tour of Nazareth, Israel, and the Jordan River.

Iwo Jima is deployed as the flag ship of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group supporting maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Mine Clearing Line Charge

U.S. Marines utilize a M58 Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC) charge for the first time at Now Zad, Afghanistan on Sept. 10, 2008.

The Marines employed a MICLIC to reduce a known area of improvised explosive devices.

The Marines are assigned with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, based out of Marine Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms.

The unit is a reinforced light infantry Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Essex Deployment

SASEBO, Japan (Sept. 19, 2008) The amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) is pulled by tugs from her berth as she departs for a scheduled deployment.

Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. Expeditionary Strike Group and serves as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed amphibious force commander.

Repairing Texas Coast Navigational Aids

09/16/2008 – A U.S. Coast Guard machinery technician catches a heaving line from Boatswain Mate 3rd Class Stephen Blowe from a buoy in the navigation channel in the Sabine Pass near Texas Sept. 16, 2008, following the landfall of Hurricane Ike.

The Aids to Navigation Team out of Mobile, Ala., is conducting the repairs to navigational aids along the coast of Southeast Texas that were damaged by the hurricane’s heavy winds.

Merchant ships wait for port to reopen

GALVESTON, Texas (Sept. 19, 2008) Merchant ships are anchored off the coast of Galveston, Texas, waiting for the port to reopen during the recovery following Hurricane Ike devastation.

Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) 2 Disaster Relief Team, embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4), is taking part in the effort to clear the Port of Galveston.

Nassau is anchored off the coast of Galveston to provide defense support to civil authorities as directed in the wake of Hurricane Ike.
