HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan (Jan. 25, 2009) Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 7 place dirt into Hescoe protective barriers utilizing an up-armored excavator at a forward operating base.

NMCB-7 is deployed to Afghanistan to provide contingency construction support to Alliance forces supporting NATO International Security Assistance Forces.

$350 Million Spacecraft -- Unload Carefully

Aircrews from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., and Boeing employees offload the Wideband Global SATCOM spacecraft from a C-5 Galaxy Jan. 21 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

The equipment is part of the Atlas 5 rocket mission set to launch March 9.

More than 500 Wool blankets, along with children’s clothing and toys were distributed to citizens.

The U.S. paratroopers are assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division’s 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Bremerton is returning from a six-month deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.

EAST CHINA SEA (Jan. 29, 2009) Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Kevin Harris, from Drew, Miss., stands watch on the helm aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2).

Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. expeditionary strike group and serves as the flagship for Combined Task Force 76, the Navy’s only forward-deployed amphibious force commander.

Chicago Bulls Score Partnership with Navy

DEERFIELD, Ill. (Jan. 21, 2009) Chicago Bulls center-forward Joakim Noah signs autographs for a group of Chicago-area recruits at the Chicago Bulls Berto Center practice facility.

The 30 recruits were part of an enlistment swearing-in ceremony at the center marking a new partnership between Recruit Training Command and the Chicago Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls division will train for eight weeks at Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill., the Navy’s only boot camp, before joining Navy schools and commands around the world.

Lassen Completes Successful Dili Visit

DILI, Timor-Leste (Jan. 26, 2009) Lt. j.g. Kristina Rohlin, from Russell, Pa., assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82), checks the size of a shirt before giving it to a girl at the Missionary Dominican Sisters of the Rosary orphanage in Dili, Timor-Leste.

Lassen arrived in Dili Jan. 26 for a scheduled port visit and will engage in goodwill activities with the people of Timor-Leste.

Lassen is assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15 and is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

Super Bowl XLIII Security

TAMPA, Fla. – Boat crews from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg, Fla., patrol a security zone in the Garrison Channel near the Tampa Convention Center Jan. 29.

Crews from more than 10 federal and local law-enforcement agencies are patrolling the security zone to ensure safety for the upcoming Super Bowl XLIII.

Navy Task Force, Partner Nations Deter Pirate Attacks

GULF OF ADEN (Jan. 23, 2009) Members of a visit, board, search and seizure team assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72) ride through a wave while conducting a training exercise with the British Royal Navy frigate HMS Portland (F 79).

Mahan is part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, a multinational task force conducting counter-piracy operations in and around the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Seat.
