NATO Sea Sparrow Intercepts Tactical Air-Launched Decoy

PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 8, 2009) USS George Washington (CVN 73) intercepts a Tactical Air-Launched Decoy with a NATO sea sparrow missile while conducting surface-to-air defense training. George Washington, the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, is currently underway supporting security and stability in the Western Pacific Ocean. Mineman Aft Lookout Watch

PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 08, 2009) - Mineman 3rd Class Tell Boyett stands aft lookout watch on the mine counter-measures ship USS Defender (MCM 2). Defender is steaming to Okinawa to participate in ANNUALEX 21G, a huge annual exercise conducted by the U.S. and Japanese Navies. Launching Landing Craft Utility

Hurricane Hunters Fly Into Ida

The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron "Hurricane Hunters" fly the WC-130J Hercules, similiar to this one, into the 2009 hurricane season. The planes are equipped with the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer, which measures the wind speeds at the surface. The data collected by the Hurricane Hunters increases the accuracy of the National Hurricane Center Forecast by 30 percent.
