Stern Gate Marriage

A Navy Region Southwest tug boat passes the open stern of the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu as U.S. Navy sailors prepare for a stern gate marriage in San Diego, Feb. 17, 2011. In a stern gate marriage, crews lower a landing craft onto the ramp of the ship's well deck, enabling vehicles to simply drive off. This evolution eliminates the process of ballasting and de-ballasting the ship's well deck, saving valuable time. Navy photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class James R. Stanley Jr.
