VERACRUZ, Mexico (July 22, 2010)

Navy divers assigned to Company 2-6 of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2 are lowered over the side on a staging platform during a salvage recovery exercise with Mexican navy divers aboard the Military Sealift Command rescue and salvage ship USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51).

MDSU-2 is participating in Navy Diver-Southern Partnership Station, a multinational partnership engagement designed to increase interoperability and partner nation capacity through diving operations.

Speaking with the local Afghans, the soldiers of Company B soon learned this area rarely receives any outside visitors. “No one has ever come here for 35 years. Not even the Russians,” said Naqib, a local villager, through an interpreter. Mistaken for Russian soldiers in the past, the Georgian soldiers emphasized they were not Russians, and were there to help and learn as much as possible about the local security situation and needs of their village. Lance Cpl. Mike Lawver, an electronics technician with Regimental Combat Team 2, fires his M16 A2 service rifle during an engagement with enemy forces just outside the walls of Forward Operating Base Jackson in Helmand province, July 23. Lawver and his fellow Marines ran towards the area of enemy fire and began returning fire while concealed via a protective barrier. The firefight began early in the evening and continued for about an hour after insurgents, concealed within a nearby tree line, began firing at the base.
